Before Chromecast, there was Chromemote

Founder - Mote Labs

Before there was Chromecast, there was Chromemote. A Chrome browser extension that turned your computer into a Google TV remote and could fling content from your browser directly to your television.

Originally pitched at 3 Day Startup and built over a weekend, Chromemote grew to nearly 35,000 daily active users. It was featured on Lifehacker, Android Central, and other major tech publications.

The extension implemented the Anymote protocol to enable communication between Chrome extensions and Google TV set-top devices. Selected for the Microsoft Imagine Cup Accelerator, one of fifteen teams flown to Silicon Valley for a week-long intensive. Won a $5,000 innovation award.

Ultimately killed when Google launched Chromecast, validating the exact use case Chromemote had pioneered years earlier.
